At the start of Test cricket, the Indian team was not a very successful team though. For the first few decades, Test cricket was dominated by West Indies, England and Australia. After independence, great players like Sunil Gavaskar joined the Indian team but the team had to face difficulties to win.

One reason was that, apart from the batsmen, the bowlers could not contribute much as they were not very proficient in batting. Gradually this practice started changing and such bowlers started coming in the Indian team who had little knowledge of batting.

Due to the ability to stay at the crease for some time, the team also started getting support from the other end. If a batsman is at the crease and a bowler is also playing at the other end and he had some technical skills apart from defensive shots, then this thing can prove to be a win-win for a batsman. Test cricket is the most toughest format of the game and for a bowler to stay at crease against top bowlers was not easy.

    Anil Kumble

The former Indian captain Anil Kumble, popularly known as Jumbo, scored a century after many years of his Test career. With age, his technique improved and scored a century. Anil Kumble also scored a century against England at The Oval as he scored an unbeaten 110 runs in his inning. That match ended in a draw.

    Ajit Agarkar

Ajit Agarkar initially scored zero runs in Test cricket on several occasions. Accurate in fast bowling, he was also considered to have batting ability but did not get much success. Ajit Agarkar scored an unbeaten 109 in the second innings of the 2002 Lord’s Test against England. This was his only Test century of his career. India had to face defeat by 170 runs in that match though.

    Harbhajan Singh

Harbhajan Singh is the player who has scored a century in Test cricket twice. The special thing is that both the centuries were scored continuously against New Zealand. Harbhajan Singh, who scored 115 during the second innings of the Ahmedabad Test match in 2010, also scored an unbeaten 111 during the first innings in the next match played in Hyderabad.
