2022 has been a unique year in the history of Indian cricket. For the first time in the game’s history, the Indian cricket team has had more than five captains in a calendar year. So far, eight Indian players have led the Men in Blue across different formats of the game.

In the last 15 years, when Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni were the captains, very few Indian players got a chance to lead the squad. Some could not handle the responsibility well, but the following three did a great job as the Indian captain. Unfortunately, they never got the full-time captaincy position in the Indian team.

1. One of the retired Indian players – Gautam Gambhir

Two-time IPL winning captain Gautam Gambhir captained India on six occasions in his international career. Interestingly, the Indian team won all the six games which they played under Gambhir’s captaincy. However, since MS Dhoni was doing a phenomenal job as the Indian captain, Gambhir never got an opportunity to become the nation’s full-time skipper.

2. Ajinkya Rahane

Current Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane has an enviable record in Test cricket as captain. The right-handed batter has led India in six Tests, registering four wins and two draws. Two of those four wins came against Australia in 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy when the team was down 0-1.

Not many fans would remember that Rahane has captained the Indian team in limited-overs cricket as well. He has won all three ODIs as captain, while in T20Is, he has won one out of two matches.

3. One of the retired Indian players – Virender Sehwag

Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag was India’s first T20I captain. He had more than 50% win record in ODIs, while in T20Is, he won his only match as skipper. In Tests, he won two, lost one and drew one as captain.
