As India isn’t in the best of shapes in the ongoing Test series against New Zealand, there are talks about how Rohit Sharma might just take a backseat and take a break for personal reasons. As the rumours go, the Indian skipper might opt to take himself out of the equation in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
In case if Rohit doesn’t lead the Indian cricket team in the first Test of the BGT, here are three names who can step up to fill in the big shoes.
#1 Jasprit Bumrah
It goes without saying that Bumrah is the vice-captain of the team and the deputy to Rohit Sharma. He has already led the Indian side in England and won’t hesitate to pull off the same feat again. He is India’s best bowler in pace-friendly conditions and will be a major asset to the Indian squad if he leads them Down Under.
#2 Virat Kohli
The man who turns into an unstoppable machine in Australia, Virat Kohli has formerly led India to the 2019 triumph of the BGT and was also a part of the squad that defeated Australia back in 2021. He just played that infamous first Test, following which he had to leave. He knows how to lead the side as he has been one of the most successful Test captains for India away from home and when it comes to Australia, VK is a different beast altogether.
#3 Shubman Gill
Touted as the next big thing in Indian cricket, Shubman Gill has already proven his versatility over the years that he has been playing, He did a more or less decent job as the Gujarat Titans captain. Another thing about Gill is that he is a very adaptable player.
Gill also doesn’t give up so easily. When he was initially being attempted to be fitted in the number three slot, runs weren’t coming by and he kept at it. Eventually he found his stride back and was up and running. In Australia where the environment is going to be downright hostile, you would need someone with such an elite mindset.
