Overseas cricketers usually have a very unpredictable fate in IPL. Unless the players fall into an elite category comprising the likes of David Warner and Rashid Khan, it is hard to be confirmed about an IPL contract. In this article, we take a look at seven foreigners unsold in the 2018 mega-auction but could earn a big salary in 2022 IPL.

IPL 2022 will see two new teams. Hence, at least eight more foreigners will feature in the competition. Therefore, some players who did not get sold in the 2018 mega-auctions might get a chance at the upcoming bidding event. Not just a chance, but these players could extract an expensive bid too.

1) Jonny Bairstow

Jonny Bairstow is one of the players unsold in the 2018 mega-auction but might earn a big salary in IPL 2022. While it is unlikely that Sunrisers Hyderabad will retain him, Bairstow is sure to command a huge bid if he comes to the auctions. He is a power-hitter who can either play as an opener or in the middle-order. The Englishman is a reliable wicket-keeper as well. This might make him one of the expensive players at the auctions.

2) Lockie Ferguson

Lockie Ferguson has the ability to lead the pace attack of an IPL XI. He did that in the UAE leg of IPL 2021. He has actually been in good form for a few years now. Two new teams are in IPL 2022 and hence, the Kiwi might command a big price at the auctions.

3) Aiden Markram

Aiden Markram showed flashes of his skills in the UAE leg of IPL 2021. He followed it up with a fine show in the T20 World Cup. The South African did well in the middle-order, and hence, a few teams might target him at the auctions.

4) Nicholas Pooran

Nicholas Pooran is also one of the foreigners unsold in the 2018 mega-auction but might earn a big salary in IPL 2022. Although his recent form has not been great, the West Indian is considered a special talent in T20 cricket. He is a wicket-keeper, too, and hence, teams are likely to go hard for him.

5) Joe Root

Joe Root did not find a buyer in IPL 2018 mega-auction. Since then, he himself has pulled out of IPL. However, as per reports, he is likely to enroll for the 2022 mega-auction. He is in the form of his life and although he is not rated as a T20 player, Root could find a franchise next season. He is a technically compact cricketer and has loads of experience. The English skipper can bowl a bit of off-spin as well.

6) Jason Holder

Jason Holder has been underrated in the T20 format. For SRH, he has done well with both the bat and the ball. Holder also brings leadership values to the team. Recently, he said he would like to open the batting in T20’s. Some teams might actually try that out. That aside, his all-round skills will be of use to many teams.

7) Josh Hazlewood

Josh Hazlewood’s stocks as a T20 bowler has increased after his performance in the T20 WC. He also did well for CSK in IPL 2021. Hazlewood is lethal in the powerplay but has also done well in the middle-overs. Hence, either as a player for the XI or as a backup, the Aussie could be in demand.
