Explained: Here’s why next ICC T20 World Cup is in 2022

The 2021 edition of the ICC T20 World Cup is currently happening in Oman and the United Arab Emirates. Oman and UAE co-hosted the opening round of the competition, where Bangladesh, Papua New Guinea, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Oman, Netherlands, Namibia and Scotland played for four spots in the Super 12 round. Not many fans would know that the four teams that qualified for the Super 12, namely Namibia, Scotland, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have also earned the ticket to the T20 World Cup that is slated to happen next year.

For the second time in cricket history, fans will witness two T20 World Cup tournaments in two years. The inaugural edition of the mega event happened in 2007, and then the next two events were in 2009 and 2010. Currently, the T20 World Cup is happening in the Middle East, and next year, Australia will play host to the ICC T20 World Cup 2022.

Many fans might be wondering why there is a T20 World Cup in 2021 and 2022, well, the original plan was to have the T20 World Cups in 2020 and 2021. However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the board postponed the T20 World Cup in Australia from 2020 to 2022.

ICC T20 World Cup aims to increase popularity of cricket in other parts of the world

Initially, the ICC Champions Trophy was going to happen in 2021. However, the International Cricket Council changed it to T20 World Cup so that more teams can play. In Champions Trophy, only the top eight teams participate.

ICC Head of Events Chris Tetley had said: “The decision to replace the Champions Trophy with a T20 World Cup in 2021 was driven by our commitment to global growth and use T20 as our vehicle to do that. Of course that presented us with a one-off qualification challenge.”
