Gill, at 24, assumes his first IPL franchise leadership role, having joined GT in a pre-auction deal before the 2022 IPL auction. He was acquired for Rs. 8 crore after being released by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), where he spent four seasons.

In a widely circulated social media video, Gill expressed gratitude for being appointed GT’s captain and highlighted the significance of loyalty in leadership, particularly in the context of Pandya’s departure.

Acknowledging the responsibilities that come with captaincy, Gill stressed virtues such as commitment, discipline, hard work, and loyalty. He recognized the presence of seasoned leaders like Kane Williamson, Rashid Khan, David Miller, and Wriddhiman Saha within the team, aiming to reestablish GT’s dominance in the upcoming IPL season.

Despite his past roles as vice-captain of the India U-19 team and captain of various India A sides, Gill admitted that leading Gujarat in the IPL presents a new and challenging chapter. He expressed humility, emphasizing the need for time to comprehend the full implications of his captaincy role. Gill’s previous leadership experiences, encompassing the Duleep Trophy, Deodhar Trophy, and India A tours, undoubtedly equip him with valuable insights into leadership dynamics and team management.
