During the first innings, the Blackcaps set a competitive target of 288 runs, with standout performances from Glenn Phillips, Tom Latham, and Will Young, each contributing crucial half-centuries.

The second innings began with a bang for New Zealand, as Matt Henry and Trent Boult removed Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran early on. Returning to the spectacular catch, it happened in the 14th over when Hashmatullah Shahidi was facing Lockie Ferguson.

After blocking the fifth delivery of the over, Shahidi tried to fend off a bouncer that spiraled towards square-leg. As the ball soared skyward, Santner sprinted backward, executed a full-stretch dive, and managed to grasp the ball with his left hand. This stunning catch led to the dismissal of the Afghan captain, who had scored eight runs off 29 balls with just one boundary to his name.
