Indian cricket team’s star batter Shreyas Iyer gave a hilarious explanation while describing why KL Rahul is his favorite captain. Iyer generally plays as a specialist batter. However, during the ODI series between India and South Africa earlier this year, stand-in skipper KL Rahul gave him a chance to bowl.
Iyer has bowled only in four innings during his ODI career. Two of them were under Rahul’s captaincy during the ODIs against South Africa. In one match, he bowled only one ball, where South Africa scored the winning runs. In the second game, he returned with figures of 0/21 in three overs.
Not a single Indian captain previously gave him more than one over in an ODI match. So Shreyas was happy that Rahul backed his bowling skills. Here’s what the new Kolkata Knight Riders captain said about the Lucknow Super Giants skipper during a chat on Red Bull Clubhouse.
“He’s got a very calm demeanor and his on-field decision making is very instinctive. I really enjoyed playing under him. Also, he gave me three overs of bowling, which none of the captains previously had done. So yeah, he’s my favorite captain!,” Iyer was quoted as saying by Times Now News.
Shreyas Iyer has never bowled an over in IPL under his own captaincy
Fans should note that while Iyer bowled three overs for the Indian cricket team during an ODI match against South Africa, he has never used himself as a bowler while leading in the IPL. He has captained the Delhi Capitals in the IPL in multiple seasons, but Iyer is yet to bowl a delivery in his IPL career.
This year, he will captain the Kolkata Knight Riders team. It will be interesting to see if he picks himself to bowl an over or two in the middle during the 2022 IPL season.
