While expressing reservations about the selected Indian player, Gavaskar remains hopeful that the talented fast bowler will defy expectations on the field.

With the return of seasoned players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to the playing XI for the 1st Test, Gavaskar believes the visitors have the potential to amass significant runs against the South African bowling lineup.

Gavaskar notably points out the absence of Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi, suggesting that this could play to the advantage of the Indian batsmen, enabling them to post substantial totals in the Test series.

Addressing the Indian bowling lineup, Gavaskar elaborates on his choice of Mukesh Kumar as the appropriate replacement for the injured Mohammed Shami, emphasizing his ability to replicate Shami’s style of play.

Expressing reservations about Prasidh Krishna’s preparedness due to his recent recovery from injury, Gavaskar underscores the importance of proving himself wrong on the field. He acknowledged the automatic selection of Bumrah and Siraj as opening bowlers, given their stellar performances in both white-ball and red-ball cricket over the past year and a half.

“I am unsure about Prasidh Krishna. He’s returning from an injury, and I’m not confident about his ability to bowl 15-20 overs in a day. I hope he proves me wrong because if he does, it means India is performing well, and that would make me very happy. I think Bumrah and Siraj are automatic choices due to their excellent performances over the past year and a half in both white-ball and red-ball cricket,” said Gavaskar.

Considering various factors, including pitch conditions, Gavaskar advocates for Mukesh Kumar as his third-choice bowler, citing his proficiency in swinging the ball and maintaining consistent lines and lengths. Drawing on Kumar’s experience in delivering extended spells in the Ranji Trophy, Gavaskar deems him a suitable option for those scenarios where bowlers may need to bowl 18 to 20 overs in a day.
