After so much hype, the Sanjeev Goenka-owned IPL franchise has been named the Lucknow Supergiants. Previously, in 2016 and 2017, the Rising Pune Supergiant franchise played in the IPL. They had the same owners. Many fans expected the Goenka group to name the Lucknow-based franchise in a similar way, and it happened exactly the same. The only different is that there is no word before the city name, but the second word is Supergiants.

In 2016, the Rising Pune Supergiants debuted under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Incidentally, even the first captain of Lucknow Supergiants is an Indian wicket-keeper batter. The team has named KL Rahul as their first captain. Another coincidence is that Dhoni played for a team having Kings in their title before moving to Supergiants, and even Rahul played for a team having Kings in their name before switching to Goenka-owned franchise.

Fans should note that after failing to qualify for the playoffs in 2016, the Goenka group renamed the franchise as Rising Pune Supergiant. It will be interesting to see if the name of the Lucknow-based franchise remains Supergiants or Supergiant in the coming days. Apart from captain KL Rahul, the team has also signed Australia’s star all-rounder Marcus Stoinis and uncapped leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi.
