As per Cricbuzz reports, both Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings made attempts to acquire Rohit Sharma from Mumbai Indians following Hardik Pandya being named the new Mumbai captain. However, the management of the five-time champions declined the offers, a decision confirmed by the interested team.
Expressing their eagerness, a franchise official stated, “We would have given anything to trade Rohit Sharma from Mumbai Indians, but our offer was rejected, and we are no longer in the race.”
Rohit Sharma served as the captain of Mumbai Indians for a decade, leading them to five IPL titles. Despite his past successes, his recent performance dip in the last two years and Mumbai Indians finishing last in 2022 led to a change in leadership. The team reached the playoffs in 2023.
Supporting Mumbai Indians’ decision, Sunil Gavaskar endorsed the replacement of Rohit with Hardik, stating, “There are no rights and wrongs. The decision is for the benefit of the team. In the last two years, Rohit’s contribution with the bat hasn’t been satisfactory, and the team failed to win the league. They were No. 9 or 10 in 2022 and qualified for the playoffs in 2023,” as shared on Star Sports.
Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians once again had a terrific IPL Auction ahead of IPL 2024, securing two highly rated bowlers Gerald Coetzee and Dilshan Madushanka for combined less than 10 Crore despite having about 17 Crore on the purse. They also later bagged Sri Lankan bowler Nuwan Thusara for 4.80 Crore.
