Prithvi Shaw had his debut for Northamptonshire in the ongoing Royal London One-Day Cup in England, and despite a decent performance with the bat against Gloucestershire on August 4, 2023, his outing will be remembered for unfortunate reasons.

Initially, Shaw was supposed to play two four-day County Championship fixtures for Northamptonshire as well, but visa delays caused him to only participate in the 50-overs format.

His List-A record is impressive, boasting an average of 52.54 in 53 innings, accumulating 2627 runs, including eight centuries and 11 half-centuries. His highest score of 227 not out was achieved in February 2021.

It was an eventful match for Northamptonshire against Gloucestershire. After opting to bat first in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire posted a competitive total of 278 runs in 48.4 overs, thanks to impressive innings from Graeme van Buuren (108) and Anwar Ali (61), with Ben Sanderson and Rob Keogh picking crucial wickets.

In response, Northamptonshire faced a challenging situation as they lost early wickets in quick succession, finding themselves at 30/5. Notable batsmen like Emilio Gay, Ricardo Vasconcelos, Sam Whiteman, Luke Procter, and Rob Keogh all fell for single-digit scores.

Prithvi Shaw, however, displayed determination and managed to score 34 runs off 35 balls, including 2 fours and 1 six. Nevertheless, the manner in which he got out will surely be a topic of discussion on social media for some time.

It was a crucial moment in the 16th over of the chase when Prithvi Shaw faced Netherlands’ Paul van Meekeren. Shaw attempted to pull a bouncer, but unfortunately missed the delivery, causing him to lose his balance. As he fell near the stumps, his leg brushed against them, dislodging the bails in an unexpected and unusual manner, resulting in his dismissal.

The surprising mode of dismissal left Shaw in disbelief as he sat on the ground while Van Meekeren celebrated his wicket. Eventually, Shaw got up and made his way back to the pavilion, knowing that the dismissal would be talked about for some time.
