Australia’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign ended when Bangladesh lost against Afghanistan in the final match of the Super 8s round. The Aussies needed a win from Bangladesh to stay alive in the tournament, but Afghanistan prevailed in a low-scoring thriller to secure a historic place in the semifinals round.

As always, there is a transition phase in the teams after a majorly successful run. Australia won the T20 World Cup 2021, ODI World Cup 2023 and World Test Championship 2023 with the same core group of players. Hence, they might think of changing some players now.

Opening batter David Warner has already announced retirement. Here are two other Australian stars who can quit the T20I format after early elimination from T20 World Cup 2024.

    1. Matthew Wade might retire from T20Is after T20 World Cup 2024

Wicketkeeper batter Matthew Wade received enormous backing from the team management during the T20 World Cup. However, the southpaw could not repeat his heroics from the 2021 edition of the tournament.

Wade is 36 years old right now, and by the time the next T20 World Cup arrives, he will be 38. Perhaps, he should retire from T20Is and allow new wicketkeepers to audition for the spot. Someone like Josh Inglis can be a great fit for this position.

    2. Mitchell Starc

Mitchell Starc produced an extraordinary performance in IPL 2024, but he could not perform well when it mattered the most in the T20 WC. Rohit Sharma absolutely destroyed him in St. Lucia. It is pertinent to note that Starc did not even feature in Australia’s playing XI for the match against Afghanistan.

With players like Spencer Johnson and Nathan Ellis waiting to become a part of Australia’s pace attack, it is the right time for Starc to quit T20Is and focus more on the longer formats.
