Gary Kirsten joined Pakistan as their head coach before the T20 World Cup 2024. Since Kirsten led India to the 2011 ODI World Cup title and then the Gujarat Titans won the IPL trophy under his guidance, Pakistan fans would have hoped for a spectacular performance from their team.
Unfortunately for Pakistan and their fans, the Men in Green suffered a shock defeat at the hands of debutants USA in their first match itself. In the next match, India defended a 120-run target against them in New York. These two defeats meant that Pakistan had no chance of qualifying for the Super 8s.
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is known for making quick changes to its team management, especially if the results do not match the expectations. It seems likely that Gary Kirsten will be sacked, and here are two big names who can replace him as head coach.
1. Wasim Akram can replace Gary Kirsten
Former Pakistan all-rounder Wasim Akram made a lot of suggestions to the team management as an expert on talk show. Akram has the experience of coaching, having served as a bowling coach and mentor for IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders in the past. It will be hard for PCB to convince Akram, but if they can do so, he is the best choice.
2. Jonathan Trott
Afghanistan cricket has reached tremendous heights under the coaching of Jonathan Trott. The former England batter has played a major role in Afghanistan’s rise, and even Pakistan needs someone who can help them move up from the bottom.
Trott can bring the best out of the talent available in Pakistan. If he leaves Afghanistan team, Pakistan should try to approach him as their next head coach, especially in white-ball cricket.
