It is not often we see that a World Cup captain gets dropped from a side. That said, various reasons could have played a part in the making of this decision.

1) Faf du Plessis – South Africa

Faf du Plessis last played an ODI in the 2019 World Cup. He retired from Tests but due to various controversies, he is not part of the ODI and T20I squads. Interestingly, when you take a look at his performances in the T20 leagues, despite his age, he is in top form. Especially with the tournament happening in India, Faf’s experience would have been of great use. Now, Temba Bavuma will lead the side and will operate in the top-order.

2) Sarfaraz Ahmed – Pakistan

Sarfaraz Ahmed is one of the captains from the 2019 WC who has not retired but still won’t play in the 2023 ODI World Cup. While Faf’s axing from the squad may not be attributed to cricketing reasons alone, in Sarfaraz’s case, it is mostly due to his form. Yes, he did make a comeback for a short while. However, his performances did not guarantee him a spot in the squad. While Babar Azam has taken over the reins as the captain, the likes of Mohammad Rizwan and Mohammad Haris are currently operating as the keepers.
