Captaincy is a very important part of any team sport. The player with the best leadership skills is generally named the captain of a team. He has the power to make decisions on the field. As far as cricket is concerned, the captain has a say in which players should be picked in the team, which players should bat at a particular position and which bowler should bowl a particular over.
Captaincy is an extremely difficult job, especially for the players who have never done it before. Even the experienced skippers have had a tough time in their respective careers at some point. The coach helps them out with the decision-making in those moments.
However, there have been a couple of instances in the recent past, when a captain was named in the playing XI, he was there on the field, and yet, the coach was making all the decisions for the team instead of the skipper. Here’s a list of the two names.
1. Hardik Pandya revealed that Ashish Nehra did captaincy for Gujarat Titans in first few matches
In a recent chat with Gaurav Kapoor on GK meets GT podcast, Hardik Pandya disclosed that he had no idea whom to give the overs in the first-ever IPL match between Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants, which was also his first game as captain. He also struggled to set the field.
So, whenever there was a break between the overs, he would go to coach Ashish Nehra, who would make the decisions for the team. Until Hardik understood captaincy, Ashish did the job for GT in a few matches.
2. Eoin Morgan and Brendon McCullum
During Kolkata Knight Riders’ matches in first half of IPL 2021, KKR coach Brendon McCullum was spotted giving signs in the form of numbers to the captain Eoin Morgan. It was a clear indication that the coach and analysts were calling the shots with regards to bowling changes and even field placements.
