World Championship of Legends 2024 has begun in the United Kingdom, and there are six teams in the tournament, namely India Champions, Pakistan Champions, South Africa Champions, Australia Champions, England Champions and West Indies Champions.
As a thumb rule, the BCCI does not allow Indian cricketers to play in other T20 leagues unless they have officially retired from all formats of international and domestic cricket. The other boards do not have this rule.
Although World Championship of Legends name suggests that the tournament features retired cricketers, here’s a list of two such players who are yet to retire officially but are playing in this tournament.
1. Shoaib Malik is playing in World Championship of Legends 2024
Former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik is one of the biggest names in the tournament. Malik was the skipper of the Pakistan side in the inaugural T20 World Cup, where they finished runners-up. The off-spin bowling all-rounder even played for his country in the 2021 T20 World Cup, where he destroyed Scotland.
Malik made it clear in 2023 that he was available for selection for the 2024 T20 World Cup, but the selectors did not pick him. He is yet to retire officially, but he is playing for the Pakistan Champions team now.
2. Faf du Plessis
As per Sportskeeda, Royal Challengers Bengaluru captain Faf du Plessis is a part of the South Africa Champions team in the ongoing WCL team. He is not the skipper of the team, but he is present as one of the main batters.
Faf has already committed to the Major League Cricket tournament in USA, where he will captain the Texas Super Kings. It will be interesting to see how he manages both the contracts in the short span now.
