In recent tournaments, we have seen all nations naming Standby Players. They are important to add backups and some quality resources to aid the preparation of the main players. Here, we take a look at the list of three Indians who could be Standby Players for the ODI World Cup 2023.
For ODI World Cup 2023, as well, we can expect some players to be on this list. While they will be the first option if an injury occurs to any player from the main squad, these cricketers will also be important in supporting the main players to be in the best of form for the event.
1) Prasidh Krishna
The Karnataka pacer has recently returned from injury and will be a part of the Ireland T20I series. Although he does not have recent game time, Prasidh is a valuable asset because of the attributes he brings to the table. India does not have too many pacers with the ability to hit the deck consistently. Prasidh can do that and hence, if he does not make it to the main squad, he will surely be a part of the reserves.
2) Sanju Samson
Sanju Samson is one of the Indians who could be a Standby Player for the ODI World Cup 2023. If KL Rahul is fit for the World Cup, Sanju is unlikely to be selected. Ishan Kishan might be preferred as the backup keeper. However, if any of the middle-order batter gets injured, Sanju Samson will be one of the first options to be named as the replacement. Since he is also a wicket-keeper, he has an advantage and therefore, he will be in the plans.
3) Tilak Varma
Going by his T20I performances, so far, there are already calls for him to be included in the main squad. However, it would be unwise to do it. He is just 20-years-old and has not played a single ODI till now. Nevertheless, considering he is a left-handed middle-order batsman, he can included as a reserve option. Hence, Tilak Varma is also on this list.
