Delhi Capitals are looking to name a new captain for IPL 2025. The Delhi-based franchise released their skipper Rishabh Pant ahead of the mega auction. Many fans expected DC to sign Rishabh at the mega auction, and they actually got him as well by using RTM, but Lucknow Super Giants raised the price to INR 27 crore to make it very hard for DC to sign him back.
After failing to sign Rishabh Pant at the mega auction, Delhi Capitals hunt for other players who could captain the team in IPL 2025. In fact, they got some pretty decent options as well. Here’s a look at the three players who can lead the Capitals team in IPL 2025 tournament.
1. KL Rahul will likely become new captain of Delhi Capitals
KL Rahul has enormous captaincy experience under his belt in the IPL. Over the last five seasons, Rahul captained Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants. Under his leadership, LSG made it to the playoffs in 2022 and 2023 although they had no experience of playing in IPL before.
It should not be a surprise if the Delhi Capitals opt for Rahul as their new skipper. Rahul also has the experience of captaining the Indian team at the international level. Plus, he is a wicketkeeper batter, who can read the game properly from behind the stumps.
2. Axar Patel
All-rounder Axar Patel has been associated with the Delhi-based franchise for a long time now. Patel even made his IPL captaincy debut for the Capitals last season for the league match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Considering that he has been the vice-captain of DC for a long time now, Patel will be a solid option to lead the Capitals franchise in the 2025 season.
3. Faf du Plessis
Not many teams would like to have a player, who is 40 years old, to lead the team. However, DC might take the risk of naming Faf du Plessis as the skipper because of his success in the recent past. Faf captained the Royal Challengers Bengaluru team brilliantly. He has captained South Africa at the international level, and he also has leadership experience of other T20 franchise leagues.
