Controversies are a part and parcel of a player’s career. However, it is unfortunate if they miss a major tournament due to it. Here, we take a look at the list of 3 players who could have played in the 2023 ODI World Cup if not for their controversies.
Some players have been at the centre of some controversies in recent months. This has led to them not getting selected for the 2023 ODI World Cup. The teams would have benefited if these players were in the mix.
1) Tamim Iqbal
Tamim Iqbal is one of the players who could have played in the 2023 ODI World Cup if not for their controversies. The Bangladesh opener retired from the game a few months ago. However, the Prime Minister of the nation had to intervene and Tamim took back his retirement. A few days later, he gave up his captaincy. Many felt that he would play a vital role in the campaign for Bangladesh. However, that did not happen as there was a controversy just a few days before the team selection, there was a reported fight with captain Shakib. Tamim was later not included in the squad.
2) Danushka Gunathilaka
When Sri Lanka toured Australia last year, Danushka Gunathilaka involved himself in an issue which was serious. The police were also involved. Till now, he has not played the game. A consistent opener, he would have been a useful player to have for the Sri Lankans. However, it is not sure if he will ever play for the side again.
3) Imad Wasim
It is not clear as to the exact reason why Imad Wasim was excluded from the side. Initially, it was due to form but later, Wasim could not hold back from making controversial statements in the media and hence, could not make it to the side. He did really well in CPL 2023 and would have been a good option to have in the team. However, he has previously made many controversial statements about Babar Azam and hence, he was not expected to get selected.
