Delhi Capitals are reportedly not happy with Rishabh Pant. According to a report by Dainik Jagran, all is not well between DC team owners and the skipper Pant, who made a miraculous comeback to cricket earlier this year in the IPL.
Pant has captained DC in three seasons – 2021, 2022 and 2024. The team qualified for the playoffs once in 2021, but after that, DC have always finished in the lower half of the points table. The report states that DC are thinking whether to release Pant or not. Here are three reasons why the franchise might not be happy with the captain.
1. Rishabh Pant has not been able to lead Delhi Capitals to the IPL trophy
Pant has proven himself as a match-winner for India. He has won games for Delhi Capitals as well, but when it comes to taking the team to playoffs or winning trophies, Pant has not been that successful. Delhi have not won a single title thus far, which is why the team may not be happy with the captain.
2. Pant has not justified his massive price tag with his performances
Delhi retained Pant as their number one player before the mega auction in 2022. It meant that the Capitals would have to shell out 16 crore from their purse every season for Pant’s services. While most of the other capped Indian batters have scored heaps of runs in IPL, the same cannot be said about Pant.
3. Delhi might want to hit the restart button
Delhi have participated in all the IPL seasons played so far. Hitting the restart button is not something new for the franchise. They have done it many times. Even they have parted ways with their head coach Ricky Ponting, who was a huge fan of Pant.
With Ponting leaving, the team may also want to release their captain Pant and try to build a fresh squad at the mega auction. It will be interesting to see if DC actually release Pant before the mega auction of IPL 2025.
