In a surprising move, Delhi Capitals announced Hemang Badani as the Head Coach for the next season. Here, we take a look at the list of three reasons why appointing Hemang Badani as Head Coach wasn’t the right decision by DC.
Usually, some popular Indian cricketers or overseas players are given the role. However, DC has pulled off a surprise. This actually may not be the best decision by the management.
1) JSW Sports will surely not retain Hemang Badani after two years
Although they take key decisions together, it is clear that GMR Group would have had a greater influence on the decision of bringing in Hemang. JSW Sports, reportedly, were inclined to get Sourav Ganguly for the role. Unless Badani delivers a trophy, there is no way JSW Sports will retain him after two years, when they will head operations. This will bring inconsistency for the players and the coaching staff, as well.
2) Hemang Badani as the Head Coach wasn’t the greatest in ILT20 2024
Yes, Dubai reached the finals in ILT20 2024 but they had finished fourth in the league stage. If not for a six-team event, DC could have not progressed. In IPL, it is a bit different. Consistency is needed in every phases of the season. Hence, it could be hard at times. Considering his recent record, Badani may not be the best signing.
3) DC needed a coach with more exposure across the globe and country
We do not know what happens in the backstage. Yes, Hemang Badani would have had multiple gigs but he was mainly focussed on TNPL and later for a short while at SRH. For an IPL Head Coach, you might need more exposure although that is not a strong criterion. Someone like Yuvraj Singh, despite his inexperience as a coach, could have worked given the respect and admiration he commands across the country and the globe.
