While everyone expected Mark Boucher to leave the outfit, not many predicted Mahela to be back. It will be interesting to see how he derives the new tactics for the side.

    1) Mumbai Indians needed a modern tactical coach

Mahela Jayawardene is more of a traditional coach with a set template and trusting it. Maybe, considering the current situation of the T20 format, MI needed a modern coach who is more inclined towards the “data-side” of the game. Their recent failures can be traced to this aspect. Hence, a fresh option such as Jonathan Trott or even Shane Bond could have been good.

    2) Mahela Jayawardene as the Head Coach wasn’t great in IPL 2021 and IPL 2022

Before Mark Boucher came in, Mahela himself had two tough seasons, not being able to help MI reach the playoffs. Therefore, there are concerns if he can go back to his peak, especially with the game having changed so much, mainly with the introduction of the Impact Player Rule.

    3) Mahela is usually stubborn with his tactics

If you take a look at the past squads and tactics of Mahela Jayawardene’s squads, you can derive a pattern easily. Despite this, he hardly changed and to his credit, it was fine because he was delivering trophies. However, the competition has now increased and teams are analysing each move. In this regard, Mahela might have to be more dynamic and adaptive.
