IPL is expanding globally. Now, slowly, cricket is becoming a lesser part of a franchise. It is more about business and making money. However, doing well on the field is the best marketing a team can get. For this, a Director of Cricket is necessary.

    1) The philosophy based on which the entire franchise must run

The Head Coach of a Team must define the philosophy of the team on the field. However, there should be someone who must drill the values of the franchise to the Head Coach. In fact, a cricketing person needs to be available to make any appointments regarding the coaches and the support staff. All of this must not be at the hands of the owners, who might sometimes not be aware of the game. In this regard, a Director is required.

    2) The long-term view of the franchise’s direction should be controlled by the Director of Cricket

A Head Coach must also look at his own career. Hence, not at all times does he get an opportunity to look at the future of the squad. Sometimes, a quick signing might have to be made which might instantly improve the squad. However, in the long-term, this signing at the auction might not help the side. It is here that a Director must create a balance such that a franchise’s long-term agenda is fulfilled and at the same time, they could get some good results in the near future.

    3) Create a clear distinction between cricket and business

Business plays a huge role in IPL. A few signings are made at the IPL auctions only for this purpose. However, at times, this could go out of hand. It is the IPL Director of Cricket who should create a clear distinction here. While cricketers fulfilling their brand commitments is necessary, it should not be at the cost of their performance on the field.
