Mayank Yadav has definitely been a revelation in the 2024 IPL where he played four matches for the Lucknow Super Giants before being ruled out with an injury. In the four matches that he played he racked up seven wickets at an economy rate of 6.99. With such impressive numbers, fans were just warming up to an immense possibility of talent that was all set to take India by storm.
Just when it felt that Mayank Yadav was here to stay, things went horribly wrong with the youngster ruled out of the IPL due to an injury. The same fans who hailed him as a future prospect was quick to call him out and point it to the world that he couldn’t even sustain himself over a span of four matches and he was supposed to take the world by storm.
With so much happening to the youngster and with the IPL mega-auction around the corner, here are three reasons why retaining him may not be the right move.
#1 Will need to mature
Mayank Yadav is undoubtedly a raw talent and yet just four matches isn’t enough for LSG to go big after the youngster. He has proven that he can stick to a particular set of discipline and yet hasn’t been tested under pressure yet. With so many uncertain factors, splurging big behind a youngster is a massive gamble. Despite the fact that gambles have worked before but since it s retention and the amounts are on the higher side, LSG might do better to swoop him from the market.
#2 Injury prone
Mayank Yadav has issues with injuries, especially considering the fact that he is still learning how to manage workload at a higher level. Frequent injuries can be a major dampener, especially in the IPL where the matches come at you thick and fast. When you are being retained, it goes without saying that you are being preferred over other big players, then it is a common saying that you should be playing a majority of the games.
#3 Mayank Yadav is now capped
Had he been uncapped, then LSG may have thought about retaining him but with him making his international debut against Bangladesh, he is going to come at a hefty price if retained. It goes without saying that he is talented but Umran Malik had almost the same set of skills and yet somehow SRH has been struggling with Malik.
