Becoming the captain of an international team is the dream of every player who starts playing cricket professionally. Coming out for the toss is a matter of pride for every individual. Also, the captain of an international team is often the most popular player of the squad.
While captaincy has many benefits, it also brings a lot of responsibilities. Many star players have struggled under the pressure of captaincy, while there have been some players who became the skipper and then their career graphs went up.
Generally, when a captain decides to step down from his position, he grooms another player of the team to take over his position. They even play some matches under him before announcing retirement, but the following four players announced their retirement when they were the skippers.
1. Eoin Morgan was England captain when he retired
Eoin Morgan led England in the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League series against the Netherlands. The left-handed batter struggled with poor form and injuries. He retired from international cricket after the series ended. ECB are yet to decide who will replace Morgan as captain in ODIs and T20Is.
2. MS Dhoni was Indian Test captain when he retired
MS Dhoni shocked the world by announcing his retirement from Test cricket in 2014. He was the Indian Test captain then. Virat Kohli took over the team’s reins after his retirement.
3. Kieron Pollard
Kieron Pollard led West Indies in ICC T20 World Cup last year. He was the captain of the team in white-ball formats when he shockingly retired from international cricket during IPL 2022. Nicholas Pooran succeeded him.
4. Pieter Seelaar
Pieter Seelar led Netherlands in the ODI series against England earlier this month. After the 2nd ODI, he retired from cricket due to injury issues. Scott Edwards replaced him as the Netherlands skipper.
