T20 World Cup is the grandest stage for the cricketers to display their T20I talent. The shortest format of international cricket celebrates its existence with a World Cup once in every two years. The 2024 edition of the mega event is currently underway.
Like every tournament, there are heroes emerging from the T20 WC every day. However, not all heroes went on become like Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma. Here’s a list of five heroes who suddenly disappeared after a solid performance at T20 WC.
1. T20 World Cup 2007 hero – Joginder Sharma
Medium pacer Joginder Sharma kept his nerve in the final against Pakistan and helped India become the world champions. Sharma never played a T20I after that though.
2. T20 World Cup 2010 hero – Craig Kieswetter
Wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter played a major role in England’s maiden T20 WC triumph in 2010. However, an eye injury led to an early end of Kieswetter’s career.
3. Asif Ali
Asif Ali emerged as a game-changer for Pakistan in the 2021 T20 WC, where they won all matches in group stages. His finishes established him as a top player, but the right-handed batter has not received any major opportunities consistently after that.
4. Carlos Brathwaite
Fans will never forget the four sixes smashed by Brathwaite in the T20 WC 2016 final against England’s Ben Stokes. While Stokes is currently England’s Test captain, Brathwaite is nowhere near the West Indies team. The 2016 T20 WC Final has proved to be the last T20 WC game of Brathwaite’s career.
5. Joe Root
Joe Root was the leading run-getter for England in the 2016 T20 WC, the year when they finished as the runners-up. He also took two wickets in one over of the final against West Indies. However, Root never played a T20 WC match after that final.
