IPL started in the year 2008, with the BCCI aiming to provide a platform to the young Indian cricketers for them to showcase their talents. The goal was to nurture young Indian talents in the franchise model. However, as the years have passed, not just Indians, but overseas players have also taken advantage of the league.
While some experienced players returned to their national sides after a stellar IPL season, there have also been some uncapped foreign players who first played in the Indian Premier League and then they played for their national side. Here’s a list of five such players.
1. Jake Fraser McGurk played in IPL before T20Is
Jake Fraser McGurk announced his arrival in the league with his clean hitting for the Delhi Capitals. The youngster has received his maiden T20I cap from Australia for the T20I against Scotland.
2. Kwena Maphaka played in IPL before T20Is
Kwena Maphaka played in the U-19 World Cup earlier this year for South Africa. Soon after, Mumbai Indians signed him as a replacement player, and after that, South Africa picked him in the senior squad for the series against West Indies.
3. Shaun Marsh
Shaun Marsh made history by becoming the first ever player to win the Orange Cap. After an incredible season with Kings XI Punjab, Marsh broke into the Australian side and stayed in the team for a long time.
4. Marco Jansen
Marco Jansen was first signed by the Mumbai Indians for the 2021 season. The tall all-rounder did a decent job, and after that, even the South African team gave him a chance to play.
5. Dewald Brevis
Nicknamed as Baby AB, Dewald Brevis made his debut for Mumbai Indians in the 2022 season. He even smashed Rahul Chahar for four sixes in an over. After that, South Africa picked him in the senior T20I team in 2023.
