IPL 2023 is a few months away, but the BCCI has already started planning for the big event. According to reports, the BCCI wants to introduce a new rule in the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League, which is currently known as the ‘Impact Player.’
This rule promises to add a new dimension to the game of T20 cricket. Since IPL runs for three months, it is important for the organisers to introduce something fresh which keeps the fans invested to the tournament. Here are five things you need to know about the Impact Player rule.
1. Teams will have to name four substitutes
A playing XI comprises 11 players in cricket. Additionally, the teams will have to name four substitutes for the match, and one of them will be the Impact Player, depending on the team management’s call.
2. Impact Player can come till the 14th over
Teams can introduce the Impact Player in the game by the end of the 14th over of the either innings. He can replace one of the players in the playing XI.
3. Impact Player can replace a batter who is already dismissed
As long as 11 batters bat in a team’s innings, the Impact Player can replace even a batter who is already dismissed and bat for the remaining overs.
4. Impact Player can replace a bowler who has already bowled a few overs
Likewise, a bowler can bowl only a maximum of four overs in the T20 matches. So, even if a Impact Player comes to the middle after the bowler whom he is replacing has bowled a few overs, he will get the chance to bowl four overs.
5. Helpful for teams batting first in dew conditions
Recently, toss has played a major role in IPL matches, with the team batting second winning a majority of the matches. However, that may change because of this rule as the bowling team can strengthen their bowling attack by introducing an Impact Player.
