What’s it all about?

The Board Of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) conducted a two-day workshop for all umpires and match referees who are about to engage in IPL this year. On this workshop, the BCCI came out with a new strategy regarding a signal used in every match being conducted on this format of cricket. Yes! It is none other than the signal used to indicate the strategic timeout between matches.

How are they changing it?

Generally, the strategic timeouts are given for both teams during the match session between 6-9 overs and 13-16 overs. Here the bowling team can ask for a break in between 6 to 9, whereas the batting side can do the same in 13-16 overs.

Well, as we all know generally strategic timeouts are indicated by a very simple and understandable gesture. The umpire shows a “T” shaped signal by using both of his hands and portraying it like the alphabet T. Now the signal is quite a bit different as the umpire will be raising his hands up, by pointing his wristwatch area.

Are they changing the duration too?

This indeed symbolically represents a simple signal showing that it’s time for a break. However, these new changes won’t affect the regular timeout interval which is of two and a half minutes. We can witness these new changes which will be made from April 7; the first game of this IPL season.
