Arshdeep achieved a milestone as the first Indian pacer to claim a fifer on South African soil against the Proteas in ODIs. Following India’s successful dismissal of the Aiden Markram-led side for 116, Arshdeep revealed a pre-match dinner conversation with Avesh Khan, discussing their aim to restrict the Proteas under 400.

“Axar (Patel), Avesh, and I went for dinner last night, discussing the challenge of facing the aggressive Proteas, especially in pink jerseys, and how they excel at hitting sixes,” Arshdeep shared during the post-match interaction.

Initially targeting a limit under 400, the duo adapted to the pitch conditions and moisture, simplifying their approach. Arshdeep acknowledged Avesh Khan for alleviating pressure and contributing crucial wickets.

“We were just thinking about restricting them under 400, but when we saw purchase from the wicket, and a bit of moisture we just kept it simple and results fell in place,” Arshdeep added.

While Arshdeep secured a fifer, Avesh Khan claimed four wickets in his eight overs. Axar Patel did not get a chance to bowl. India comfortably chased down the 117-run target with eight wickets in hand, seizing a 1-0 lead in the series.

South Africa’s tradition of donning pink jerseys, promoting breast cancer awareness, saw India register their first win against the Proteas in this unique attire. Arshdeep credited bowling coach Paras Mhambrey for his success in Johannesburg, where favorable conditions complemented his bowling style.
