BCCI changes name of Purple Cap and Orange Cap ahead of IPL 2022

The BCCI has made a major change to the names of the individual awards – Purple Cap and Orange Cap ahead of the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League. Since the inaugural edition of the IPL, the organizers have presented the Purple Cap to the player who takes the highest number of wickets and Orange Cap to the player who aggregates the highest number of runs.

Some of the biggest names in world cricket like Sachin Tendulkar, Chris Gayle, Michael Hussey, Lasith Malinga, Matthew Hayden, Virat Kohli, Dwayne Bravo, Pragyan Ojha and others have won these individual awards. So far, the wards were known as the Purple Cap and the Orange Cap, but from this year onwards, they will be known as Aramco Orange Cap and Aramco Purple Cap.

As reported by the Times of India, the BCCI have roped in Saudi Aramco as one of their sponsors for Tata IPL 2022. They will reportedly pay INR 65 crore per year to sponsor the two individual awards. Saudi Aramco is one of the biggest companies on earth, and many fans consider this as a massive deal for the IPL.

KL Rahul will be the favorite to win the Aramco Orange Cap in IPL 2022

All eyes will be on the Lucknow Super Giants skipper KL Rahul in the race to the best batter award this year. The right-handed batter has aggregated heaps of runs in the previous two IPL seasons. While he won the IPL 2020 Orange Cap, he missed out in 2021 by a close margin.

Fans should note that Rahul was number one when the league stage ended although he missed one league game against the Delhi Capitals.

This year, Rahul will open his campaign for a new team against another new franchise Gujarat Titans. It will be interesting to see how the right-handed batter performs for the Lucknow-based franchise.
