On Friday, August 18, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) extended an invitation to Jay Shah, who serves as the Secretary of the BCCI and the President of Asian Cricket Council (ACC). The invitation is for him to attend the inaugural match of the Asia Cup 2023, which is scheduled to take place between Pakistan and Nepal on August 30 in Multan.

In addition to inviting Jay Shah, the PCB has also extended invitations to the heads of other cricket boards that are members of the Asian Cricket Council for the opening match. A reliable source within the PCB indicated that the invitation to Shah was more of a hopeful gesture rather than a grounded expectation of his visit to Pakistan.

The PCB’s recent invitation to Jay Shah is essentially a continuation of the verbal invitation extended by Chairman Zaka Ashraf during their meeting in Durban at the ICC gathering, as informed by the source. Reports in the Pakistani media had previously indicated that Shah had accepted the invitation, but the Secretary of BCCI later refuted this assertion.

The PCB seemed to face an awkward situation when Pakistani media initially reported Jay Shah’s acceptance of Zaka Ashraf’s invitation, only to have it denied later. Given the complex diplomatic ties between India and Pakistan, the PCB aimed to demonstrate their commitment to keeping sports separate from politics by extending the invitation to Shah.
