Virat Kohli needs no introduction to the game of cricket. The former Indian captain has been the world’s leading run scorer across formats since his debut, and no one is even close to him in terms of any batting stats. But it looks like the BCCI has started thinking beyond him now.
The Indian board is all set to talk to the former Indian captain about his future plans in a shorter format. Some media reports confirmed that the BCCI is planning to drop Virat from the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.
The coming ICC event will be held in the USA and the West Indies in June. India has not won an ICC title for more than a decade now, and they are desperate to win an ICC tournament. Hence, the BCCI is planning to give chances to young players.
According to a report from Dainik Jagran, it has been learned that it will be Ishan Kishan who is likely to replace Virat at No. 3 at the T20 World Cup 2024. However, it has also been learned that all will depend on Virat’s performance in the IPL 2024.
If he fails, he might not be picked for the World Cup. Then, India will use Ishan at No. 3. The wicket-keeper batter recently played at No. 3 in the first three matches against Australia. Meanwhile, the decision to drop the former Indian captain will be a massive one.
The 35-year-old has scored 4008 runs in 107 innings at an average of 52.73 with one hundred and 37 half-centuries. He is the only player with 4000-plus runs in the shorter format. On the other hand, Virat has also scored the most runs in T20 World Cup history. He has scored 1141 runs in 25 innings at 81.50 with 14 half-centuries.
Though with the form he is in, it looks impossible to replace him, but he himself has opted out of the white-ball series on the South Africa tour. Hence, the BCCI will be talking to him about his T20I future soon.
