Once was one of the most dominating team in the world and in the sport, winning the ICC Cricket World Cup in 1975 and 1979 and have had the privilege of having players like Garfield Sobers, Lance Gibbs, George Headley, Brian Lara, Vivian Richards, Clive Lloyd, Malcolm Marshall, Curtley Ambrose etc.

But the slump in performance of the team has been so bad teams like Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and even the likes of Ireland and Netherlands getting the better of the Windies team.

The team has massively failed to transition to the modern day cricket and one of the most important reason behind the downfall of the team could be down to the fact that most of West Indies players prefer to play in the franchise T20 league than representing their national team.

After failing to reach the Super 12 round of the T20 World Cup 2022, the Caribbean side failed to directly qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and had to enter the World Cup qualifiers being played in Zimbabwe.

Despite terrible performance in the Group B, finishing third of 5 teams, they just qualified for the Super Six barely. However, the Super Six round hasn’t been kind to them as they lost 3 back-to-back matches against Zimbabwe, Netherlands and Scotland which ensured that West Indies won’t reach the pinnacle of the sport to be played in India later this year.

They still have 2 matches left in the Super Six round against the likes of Oman and Sri Lanka, but there is no way they can finish in top 2 in the points table, the required position a team need to finish in to qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
