Current Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has been fantastic as a leader so far for the Men in Blue. Under Sharma’s leadership, the Indian cricket team first whitewashed New Zealand 3-0 and then completed 3-0 clean sweeps in ODIs and T20Is against the West Indies team.
The Indian team seems strong contenders to win the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 and ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. But the team management also has the focus on the next generation now as they are aiming to groom the players who can lead the Indian side after Rohit Sharma.
It is clear that the team management has named a senior player like Sharma captain so that they can win the next global events, and at the same time, they needed a senior to step up and lead the side while the younger players gained experience.
At a pre-match press conference ahead of the T20I series against the Sri Lankan cricket team, Sharma spoke about the candidates for the role and said:
“Bumrah, KL Rahul and Pant, they have a big role to play in India’s success, they are seen as possible contenders for leadership in future. They do understand there is a responsibility on their shoulders, but we do not want to any pressure on them as they are critical for us.”
Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant have played the vice-captain’s role under Rohit Sharma
Jasprit Bumrah and KL Rahul seem to be the vice-captains for the Test and white-ball formats, whereas Rishabh Pant takes over the vice-captain’s role when both Bumrah and Rahul are unavailable. Rahul and Pant also captain IPL franchises, while Bumrah leads the pace attack.
Since all three players are regular members of the Indian team in all three formats of the game, it seems either one of the three will take over the reins from Rohit Sharma in the next three or four years.
