In anticipation of India’s World Cup winning captain MS Dhoni’s eventual retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL), Ambati Rayudu, former Indian and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) player, has pinpointed 26-year-old Ruturaj Gaikwad as the potential successor for the captaincy role at CSK.

Rayudu, speaking on The Ranveer Show, expressed his confidence in Gaikwad, citing his impressive IPL debut in 2020 and claiming the Orange Cap in 2021 with 635 runs in 16 matches.

Rayudu, who retired after CSK secured their fifth IPL title in 2023, praised Dhoni’s captaincy and acknowledged his transformative impact on players. However, he admitted to occasional puzzlement over Dhoni’s decisions.

Gaikwad, who was retained by CSK ahead of IPL 2022 Mega Auction, has amassed 1797 runs in 52 matches with an average of 39.07. His crucial role in CSK’s title triumphs in 2021 and 2023 has solidified his status as a key player for the franchise.

“Ideally, it should be Rutu (Ruturaj Gaikwad), but let’s see,” remarked Rayudu on the podcast. Gaikwad’s standout performances in the IPL, including winning the Orange Cap and contributing to CSK’s victories, make him a compelling candidate for captaincy.

Ambati Rayudu also commended MS Dhoni for his captaincy and enduring legacy in Indian cricket upon retiring from all formats after CSK’s IPL 2023 triumph.
