Led by Babar Azam, the Pakistan cricket team significantly improved their chances of qualifying for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 semi-finals with a dominant 7-wicket victory over Bangladesh. Fakhar Zaman’s outstanding performance, amassing 81 runs, was complemented by Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Wasim Jnr, who each secured three wickets, limiting Bangladesh to a total of 204.

Pakistan successfully achieved the target with 13.3 overs to spare, though falling short of a faster victory that could have enhanced their Net Run Rate (NRR). Nevertheless, their NRR improved to -0.024.

This win marked Pakistan’s third victory in the ICC ODI Cricket World Cup 2023, following previous successes against the Netherlands and Sri Lanka but also a significant loss to India. After four consecutive defeats against Afghanistan, India, Australia, and South Africa, this triumph revived their prospects.

Pakistan now occupies fifth place on the points table with six points from seven games. While the victory was a positive development, their fate is not entirely within their control. They must rely on other results to secure a semifinal spot. In upcoming matches against New Zealand and England, winning by substantial margins would not only aid their qualification but also boost their NRR.

Afghanistan has also accumulated six points, and Pakistan hopes that Australia or South Africa can defeat them to prevent them from reaching ten points. Pakistan’s qualification chances also hinge on New Zealand’s performance in their matches against South Africa and Sri Lanka. Moreover, India can play a pivotal role by defeating Sri Lanka and the Netherlands, which would further enhance Pakistan’s chances in the tournament.
