The Indian Premier League was one of the first of its kind in the world. It started with a total of eight franchises. Chennai Super Kings was one of those eight teams to play in the first edition, and they ended up as a runner-up. That was the start of the CSK’s journey.

But since then, CSK has become one of the biggest brands in franchise cricket history. They are the five-time IPL champions and have won the Champions League twice. The IPL has now become the biggest tournament in franchise cricket. As a result, the BCCI introduced WPL in 2023.

The first edition of the Women’s Premier League took place with a total of five teams in 2023. The IPL franchises like Delhi, Mumbai, Gujarat, and Bangalore purchased a side in the WPL. The five teams’ owners were Adani Group, Capri Global, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Delhi Capitals.

However, it was a surprise when CSK made the decision not to participate in the WPL. But why? CSK fans had high hopes that, just like in the IPL, the Yellow Army would have another side that would become pretty successful in the WPL.

But CSK didn’t even buy the invitation to Tender (ITT) for bidding. They even didn’t show any interest in buying one of the five franchises. According to a report from Cricbuzz, “A CSK official confirmed the decision, saying it was a strategic business call.”

Though the BCCI has decided to keep five teams for the WPL so far, if the board and governing committee decide to increase the team just like in the IPL, then there might be an opportunity for CSK to buy a team. Notably, CSK already has a few teams in other T20 competitions. So there are chances that we might see a Chennai team in the WPL in the future.
