Consequently, the line-up for the 2025 Champions Trophy is now complete. In a surprising move last month, the ICC disclosed that the top eight teams post the World Cup’s preliminary round in India would secure spots in the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan.

India secured their Champions Trophy berth by reaching the semifinals, along with second-placed South Africa, Australia in third, and New Zealand, who secured the last semifinal spot in the 2023 World Cup.

Pakistan, as the host nation, had already qualified by finishing fifth, while Afghanistan, at sixth place, is set to make its debut appearance in the Champions Trophy after an impressive World Cup performance.

England faced the risk of missing out on qualification but secured the seventh spot after back-to-back wins in their final two matches, avoiding an unexpected setback. Bangladesh claimed the eighth and final spot for the Champions Trophy.

Despite being 2002 winners, Sri Lanka failed to qualify, finishing ninth after losing seven of their nine World Cup matches. Netherlands, despite surprising victories over South Africa and Bangladesh, finished at the bottom of the table and also missed out on qualification.

The ICC’s rule means that Full-Member nations like West Indies, Zimbabwe, and Ireland will be absent from the Champions Trophy as they did not qualify for the World Cup in India.
