Former Indian cricket team batter Aakash Chopra has opined that the IPL franchise named the Royal Challengers Bangalore should not elect Virat Kohli as their captain for the upcoming Indian Premier League season. Kohli stepped down as the captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore team last year. He had already announced that IPL 2021 would be his last season as RCB skipper.
However, in the Royal Challengers Bangalore squad for IPL 2022, Virat looks one of the top candidates for captaincy. The team did retain Glenn Maxwell and sign the likes of Faf du Plessis and Dinesh Karthik at the mega auction, but Maxwell will be unavailable for the initial matches, whereas du Plessis and Karthik do not seem like long-term options.
Many members of the cricket universe felt that the Royal Challengers Bangalore would sign someone like Shreyas Iyer at the mega auction and then name him the new captain. Before the mega auction, Aakash Chopra also stated that the RCB franchise had decided an INR 20 crore budget to sign Iyer at the mega auction. However, the same did not happen.
Commenting on whether RCB should re-assign the reins of the team to Virat Kohli, Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel:
“In my opinion, RCB should not make Kohli their captain. He decided to leave captaincy to play with freedom, so don’t burden him now. This might be a good thing for the franchise; we might see a free-flowing Kohli batting without the pressure of captaincy.”

During the same video, Chopra added that Glenn Maxwell seems a decent choice for captaincy, but he should not be picked because he is an overseas player.
Chopra felt a similar situation like Eoin Morgan and KKR can arise if RCB opt for an overseas captain, which is why he felt they should not go with Maxwell as well.
