Shikhar Dhawan has been surprisingly ignored by the selectors for T20 cricket despite being one of the top performers in the Indian Premier League. The left-handed batter was one of the top run-getters for the Punjab Kings in IPL 2022, but the selection committee did not pick him in the squad for the recently concluded series against the South African cricket team and the upcoming series against the Ireland cricket team.
Since a majority of the first-choice players were unavailable for the two series, fans felt that Shikhar Dhawan could have received an opportunity to play for the Men in Blue. However, the same did not happen. The selectors recalled Dinesh Karthik to the team and the opening batters of the team were Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan.
Speaking on Star Sports, former Indian cricket team captain Sunil Gavaskar opined that Shikhar Dhawan may not feature in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 squad. Here’s what he had to say:
“No. I don’t see his name popping up. If it had to pop up, it would have been in this squad. A lot of guys have gone to England and he could have been in this squad. If he is not in this squad, I don’t see him ending in the mix (for T20 World Cup). My opening combination would have KL Rahul if he’s fit and Rohit Sharma alongside him.”
Shikhar Dhawan has not played any T20I matches in 2022
Shikhar Dhawan has been a regular member of the Indian squad in the ODI format, but he has not been a part of the T20I team. His appearance in the blue jersey came against the Sri Lankan cricket team last year, where he was the captain of the team.
It will be interesting to see if Dhawan earns a recall to the team. He has a great record in ICC tournaments and on Australian pitches.
