England wicket-keeper batter Jos Buttler pointed out how the Indian cricket team defeated the Australian cricket team at The Gabba to strengthen his point that it is not impossible to defeat the Australian cricket team in Brisbane. Before the Indian cricket team beat the Australian cricket team at The Gabba earlier this year, not a single team had been able to defeat the home side in a Test match at that venue since 1988.

It seemed like no team would be able to defeat the Australian cricket team in a Test match at The Gabba again. However, the Indian team breached their fortress by defeating the Tim Paine-led outfit by three wickets earlier this year. What made the Indian cricket team’s win more historic was the fact that they did not have a majority of their regular starters in the team. Still, the Indian side won by three wickets.

Taking confidence from the Indian team’s victory, Jos Buttler told the media ahead of the first Test of The Ashes series:

“Australia tends to play well here (Brisbane) but they obviously lost to India recently at this venue, which proves it’s not impossible to beat them here. We know to be able to do that we have to perform close to our best as a side.”

Jos Buttler was the top-scorer for England in the first innings of The Gabba Test match

England got off to a horrendous start at The Gabba as their opener Rory Burns lost his stumps to Mitchell Starc on the first ball of the series. Dawid Malan and Joe Root were also back in the hut before the sixth over culminated. Not a single England batter could score big.

Jos Buttler scored 39 runs off 58 deliveries. He was the highest run-getter for the visitors in the first innings. England could score only 147 runs in 50.1 overs.
