The 66th match of the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League is in the history books with the Lucknow Super Giants booking their place in the playoffs with a victory against two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders. KKR are now out of the competition. Interestingly, former KKR captain Gautam Gambhir was present in the opposite team’s dugout last night at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
Speaking about the match between the Lucknow Super Giants and the Kolkata Knight Riders, LSG won the toss and decided to have a bat first. The decision worked in their favor as a 210-run opening partnership between KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock guided LSG to 210/0 in their 20 overs.
Chasing 211 runs to stay alive in the competition, the Kolkata Knight Riders almost pulled off an improbable run-chase. Contributions from Shreyas Iyer, Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh took KKR close to a historic win, but Marcus Stoinis held his nerve in the final over to win the game for the Lucknow Super Giants.
In an interview with the host broadcasters after the match, Marcus Stoinis said:
“Initially, my feeling was I should’ve bowled through the middle. At the start of the over you play a bit to the conditions, a bit to the long boundary, a bit to what the batter wants to do. As things get worse, you go towards what you like to bowl and what works for you. That’s a learning for me.”
Fans react as Gautam Gambhir celebrates Lucknow Super Giants’ win in an animated manner
Gautam Gambhir, the mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants team, celebrated in an animated fashion after the team defeated the Kolkata Knight Riders and qualified for the playoffs. Here’s how fans on Twitter reacted to the celebrations:
I've never seen Gambhir celebrate like that man. Just says that there's a competitive spirit inside of everyone.
