Former Pakistan speedster Mohammad Amir has identified three potential successors to Babar Azam as the captain of the Men in Green across various formats. With Babar’s captaincy facing scrutiny after Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the World Cup 2023, Amir emphasized the need for a change to enhance the team’s overall performance.

Amir proposed a split captaincy model, suggesting Imad Wasim as the T20I captain, especially with the T20 World Cup approaching. Imad made a recent comeback in the series against Afghanistan in April, and Amir sees him as a suitable leader for the shorter format.

“For the T20I format, with the T20 World Cup on the horizon, I pick Imad Wasim,” stated Mohammad Amir during a World Cup special show on a local media channel.

For ODI captaincy, Amir recommended Shan Masood, citing his consistent performances in domestic cricket and the Pakistan Super League (PSL) as credentials. Masood’s leadership qualities and experience in longer formats make him a strong contender for the role.

As for Test captaincy, Amir suggested the return of Sarfaraz Ahmed, a seasoned campaigner with a proven track record. Ahmed’s experience and leadership skills demonstrated during his previous stint as Pakistan’s Test captain could prove crucial in reviving the team’s fortunes in the red-ball format.

To strengthen the leadership structure, Amir proposed appointing a youngster as the vice-captain in Test cricket, ensuring a pathway to groom a future leader for long-term continuity.
