Former Indian batter Mohammad Azharuddin recently gave his views on the potential spin-bowling all-rounders of the Indian cricket team for the upcoming Asia Cup and ICC T20 World Cup 2022. Azharuddin felt that the selectors would likely prefer experienced players over the youngsters for the two big events scheduled to happen later this year.
Thus, Azharuddin went with the tried and tested duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin. The two all-rounders were a part of the Indian squad that played in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 as well.
During a recent interaction with CricTracker, Mohammad Azharuddin named five all-rounders for the Indian squad that would participate in Asia Cup and ICC T20 World Cup 2022. Two of them were spin-bowling options, while the other three being the pace-bowling options.
Here’s what Azharuddin had to say:
“When you have Hardik into your side, you want an all-rounder of his calibre, but is certainly on the back foot with his injury. Along with them, I feel Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur should be there in the team. If talked about spinners, I will choose Ashwin and Jadeja due to their experience.”

Explaining the reason behind adding Ravichandran Ashwin to his list of all-rounders, Mohammad Azharuddin mentioned that the all-rounder has been doing well in the IPL for Rajasthan Royals. As a result, he could find a place in the Indian squad for Asia Cup and ICC T20 World Cup 2022.
It will be interesting to see if the selection made by Mohammad Azharuddin matches the one that the selectors make ahead of the two big events. Since the Indian team failed to make an impact in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021, it is likely that the selectors may look to try different options this year.
