Sunrisers Hyderabad had a disappointing outing in the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League. Despite having a star-studded squad, the Hyderabad-based franchise finished last in the points table. One of the main reasons behind the failure of SRH was the poor performance from the batting unit. The spin-bowling coach Muttiah Muralitharan has declared a new opening pair for this season.

For the past many years, David Warner was the primary opener of the Sunrisers Hyderabad. His opening partners changed, but he formed great combinations with both Shikhar Dhawan and Jonny Bairstow for extended periods. Warner failed to get going in IPL 2021, which led to his release from the SRH squad.

Now, in Warner’s absence, the team’s captain Kane Williamson will open the innings alongside uncapped all-rounder Abhishek Sharma. Here’s what Muttiah Muralitharan had to say in an interview with Sportskeeda:

“Abhishek Sharma was in and out of the side last season, but we want him to assume greater responsibility this time. We want him to open the batting alongside Kane. That will help us get a good left-hand, right-hand combination at the top.”

The IPL 2022 Mega Auction saw many changes in the squads of all teams. The addition of the Lucknow Super Giants and the Gujarat Titans made the auction more interesting. Muralitharan mentioned that SRH have built a squad from a long-term perspective.

In the same interview, Muralitharan added that he wants Abdul Samad, Priyam Garg and Abhishek Sharma to bring their ‘A’ game to the table for the Orange Army over the next 3 years and become the face of the franchise.

Sunrisers Hyderabad have formed a decent squad ahead of the mega auction. It will be exciting to see how they perform as a team in IPL 2022.
