In a significant development, Nepal cricket team, led by Rohit Paudel, has secured their place in the 2024 T20 World Cup, marking their return to the competition after a 10-year absence. The upcoming T20 World Cup is scheduled to take place in the United States of America (USA) and the West Indies in June 2024.
Nepal earned their spot by convincingly defeating the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with an 8-wicket victory at Mulpani Cricket Ground venue in Kathmandu on Friday.
It’s worth noting that Nepal’s last appearance in the T20 World Cup was in Bangladesh in 2014. Additionally, Oman also successfully qualified for the T20 World Cup through the qualifying match held in Kathmandu.
During their chase of UAE’s target of 135 runs at Mulpani ground, Aashif Shaikh emerged as the top scorer for Nepal with 63 runs, while Gulshan Jha contributed 22 runs, and Kushal Bhurtel added 11 runs to the total.
Nepal’s Kushal Malla played a crucial role with the ball, taking three wickets to limit UAE to a modest score. Malla bowled three overs, conceding just 11 runs while securing three wickets. Furthermore, leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane claimed 2 wickets, while Sompal Kami and Rohit Paudel each took 1 wicket.
Nepal is now set to face Oman in their next game, competing for the title of the ICC Men’s World Cup 2024 Asian Zone Qualifiers.
