“Women’s IPL Next Big Step for Growth of Women’s Cricket” – NZ captain Sophie Devine hopeful of Women’s IPL

The demand for the Women’s Indian Premier League (Women’s IPL) is growing day by day as the New Zealand women’s cricket team’s skipper Sophie Devine stated that the Women’s IPL is must for women’s cricket to take its next big step forward for the growth of Women’s cricket.

India, where people are mad about cricket and breathe cricket every second, plays host to world’s biggest T20 cricket league, which is also the world’s richest cricket league.

However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the IPL Governing Council are yet to make any plans for the Women’s IPL, but BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has told media a lot of times that the idea of a Women’s IPL is in the pipeline.

While men’s edition of the Indian Premier League is set to expand to a 10 teams affair from next season, i.e. the IPL 2022. The women’s players are still waiting for the confirmation of Women’s version of the league.

BCCI as now runs a 3 women’s teams mini T20 league called Women’s T20 Challenge. The event intially began with a two teams match but was expanded to 3 teams in 2018.

New Zealand women’s cricket team captain Sophie Devine feels that the Women’s version of the T20 league will take Women’s cricket to further growth.

Sophie Devine spoke to the media in a virtual press conference during the event where Amazon Prime Video confirmed that they will be broadcasting the New Zealand cricket team’s home match in India starting from January the 1st.

Sophie Devine hopeful of Women’s IPL

Devine stated that the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL)‘s success has played a major role in raising the profile of the game and has also helped to improve the standards of the game.

He was hopeful that a Women’s IPL will kick-off in coming few years as it will really help the game to grow globally, especially the Women’s cricket.

Her teammate Suzie Bates was also present in the event and she stated that Women’s IPL will be the next big step for women’s cricket after the success of Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) and England’s newly found format, Women’s The Hundred.
