India’s first-ever T20I captain Virender Sehwag recently gave his opinion on the current captaincy situation in the Indian cricket team. Rohit Sharma is currently the skipper of India in all three formats of the sport. But according to Sehwag, there are two reasons why the Indian team management could think about relieving Rohit as the T20I skipper.

Rohit Sharma is currently in England, where he will lead the Indian squad in the series against the England cricket team. In his absence, Rishabh Pant captained the Men in Blue during their home T20I series against the South African cricket team. At the moment, Hardik Pandya is leading the Indian cricket team in the absence of Pant and Sharma against the Ireland cricket team.

Sharing his views on the T20I team’s captaincy, Virender Sehwag said in an interaction arranged by Sony Sports Network:

“If the Indian team management has someone else in mind as captain in the T20 format, then I think, Rohit (Sharma) could be relieved.”

Virender Sehwag thinks Rohit Sharma can take the necessary breaks from cricket

Giving the two reasons why India should think about changing their T20I captain, Virender Sehwag added:

“One, that would allow Rohit to manage his workload and mental fatigue, given his age. Two, once someone new is appointed as captain in T20s, it would also allow Rohit to take breaks and rejuvenate himself to lead India in both Tests and ODIs.”

As of now, it does not look like the Indian selectors are keen to change the T20I captain because the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 is just a few months away. Rohit Sharma has done a fine job as the Indian cricket team captain, and fans hope that the Hitman leads the nation to its second T20 World Cup championship win later this year in Australia.
